Recent studies show that this is mostly due to them being the main attraction for female Sproxys to males, even though they both have them, the males tend to be larger.

The same rules apply to their back leg spikes, however, the spike shapes have to be consistent with each other (ex. a gemstone chest spike means their back spikes must be too).
